Living cost in the UK:

Living cost in the UK for an international student is more expensive than other similar countries with similar facilities. According to the UK Visas and Immigration student must budget £1,265 per month to study in London and £1,065 per month to study outside London. Students will have to multiply this amount by the number of months needed to complete the course up to 9 times and show, when they apply for student visa. Actual amount may differ as per your lifestyle and how much you socialize. An international student should consider the following things first while considering, living in a foreign country:  

Accommodation: Usually international students live in on-campus halls, Shared accommodation and Home stay. On-campus halls may charge from £50 to £80 per week while a shared room in private property may cost up to £35 to £55 per week. Home stay may cost as low as £100 per week including food and others in London and much lower outside London. 

Transport: The UK can offer lot of public transport options to you to get around. You can travel by train, bus, ferry, or taxi. A brief overview of the different modes of transportation is given bellow:

  • There are number of railway and tubes covering most of the national network.
  • Bus services are plenty and often cheaper than trains and it can be found in most of the cities.
  • Taxis and ordered minicabs can be alternative but it is expensive than other transports.

However, students may have to budget around £10 to £12 a week for transport cost. 

Food: Minimum food cost including groceries for an international student may be as low as £70 while the average may go up to £120 a month.

Others: International students may have to pay£5 per week for Internet service and another £5 per week for phone. 

Health Care: Students of non-EU nationals, who wish to attend a course which is longer than six months, need to pay a surcharge of £150 per year in order to gain access to the UK’s National Health Service (NHS). Once you access the NHS, you will get following services free of charge

  • consulting a doctor and most other doctor’s services
  • treatment in a hospital (both emergency and non-emergency treatment)

Still you may need to pay for:

  • medicines prescribed by your GP
  • some doctor’s services (e.g. vaccinations for travel, getting a sickness certificate)
  • dental treatment
  • optical treatment
